James Earl Miles, Jr. also known as “Boobie Miles,” in 1987 Boobie rushed for 1,385 yards. So his 1988 season had very high expectations. In a scrimmage, not a real game, Boobie injures his left leg by planting his leg and a player landing on it and binding it sideways. He severely hurt his leg and still chose to just use a knee brace. He did play again but only for a couple of plays and left the game limping. The next game he threatened to leave the team at halftime because of his lack of playing time. He spent the rest of the season on the bench. He ended up getting surgery but lost a lot of speed. He never played for Permian again.
After high school he attended Ronger College for one year till flunking out of school. He did play fullback and ever since he had trouble holding jobs. Boobie is a great example of an athlete that gets injured and fells at life because he thought he was going to be rich from playing pro football. Today Boobie is 315 pounds, has diabetes, and still lives in Kermit, Texas north of Odessa. He is currently trying to put a hip-hop group together. He has two children.
What Would Happen Today if Boobie was in today’s recruiting? Colleges from all over the United States would have swarmed Odessa to get a look at Boobie in action. If he ended up getting a scholarship to a college, the college would have gotten him the best medical treatment possible and the college would have had him sit out the rest of the 1988 season. He would then report for summer training camp. If his knee was still not at 100% then he would have applied for medical hardship and would have still been going to college under a scholarship. Although Boobie might have still flunked out of college, he would have been given every opportunity to be successful.
